Why Renewal Matters

At the National Medical Certification Association (NMCAB), renewal ensures that certified professionals maintain current skills, knowledge, and compliance with evolving healthcare standards. Renewal also gives employers, sponsors, and the public confidence that credentialed staff are continuously competent in their field.

Through renewal, every certificant re-affirms their commitment to:

  • Patient Safety & Quality Care
  • Compliance with Regulatory Standards (HIPAA, OSHA, ISO/IEC 17024)
  • Ongoing Professional Development
  • NMCAB’s Code of Ethics & Professional Conduct

Renewal Requirements

All credentials certified by NMCAB require renewal every 2 years. To renew, certificants must meet one of the following pathways:

Continuing Education20 approved CEU credits (continuing education units) during the 2-year cycle

Additional requirements:

  • Ethics & Compliance Attestation
  • Payment of Renewal Fee (see chart below)
  • Documentation (CEUs or work verification if selected for audit)

⚠️ Credentials that are not renewed within 30 days of expiration may require reinstatement and may be subject to late fees or retesting.

Validity & Transparency

  • Validity: Each credential’s exam and renewal standards are derived from NMCAB’s formal job analysis, which includes SME panels, incumbent and employer surveys, and detailed task inventories. All standards are reviewed on a 3–5 year cycle.
  • Transparency: Renewal fees and exam weights are directly tied to everyday job duties, giving employers and schools clear guidance on how credentials align with workforce competencies.
